HISTORIC FORT ROSS

Today, Historic Fort Ross, located along the coast of Sonoma County, serves as a California Historic State Park. However, in the 19th century, it functioned as an outpost of the Russian Empire. This cliffside fortress boasts a rich and captivating history that unfolded over a span of 30 years.

Fort Ross, established on Metini—the ancestral land of the Kashaya Pomo—was the focal point of a remarkable micro-culture. This community comprised individuals from various distinct Alaska Native tribes, as well as Russian and Baltic peoples, who coexisted and developed a unique amalgamation of customs along the California coast. One may wonder: how did this extraordinary cultural convergence come to be?
